Questionnaires for the participants of the Theater Project on Environment Issues

1. Did your understandings or perspectives of the mining issues in Cordillera changed in the process of the project?

very much changed

I grew up in a mining company where most of our basic needs are provided such as free housing, electric and water supply, and bus rides going to school. Before the workshop, I see mining as a big contributor to employment and to the development of communities. However, after visiting different mining sites and learning about how mining came about in Benguet, I realized the grave effects of mining in the environment and also to the future. The effects of mining in the environment is permanent. It cannot be reversed such as what happened in Luneta, Itogon. If this is the case, thefuture generation are left with nothing but toxic lands that cannot be farmed or agriculturally developed which is the earlier way of living of the Cordillerans.

very much changed

At first I don’t interfere really about mining because I grow up in a place where there is no mining and our environment is preserved with surrounded virgin forest. What I just know is that my brother and cousins are working and they are getting money from mining. When we are doing interviews last year (2016) I’m relating it to the activities of my brothers like other said that after they will get their money they will go to bar and spend all their money and they will work hard again for money. When I saw that mining was slowly killing the environment I have that pity to the place and also people because they are the one who get the bad effect of mining to the environment. We can rehabilitate the environment if people from the mining community could participate. The rehabilitation is for them and for the future also. As an agriculturist they wasted the land that was given by God for them because land is a lifetime gift from God, as the forefather before work is planting.

very much changed

I was very much changed during and after the balitok project because I was awaked on environmental issues and preservation. I realized that by simply living onthe belief of protecting our environment and influencing other people by simpleact, I am making a big difference. The exploitation of these big mining company in our place brought only a false conscious among the people.

I was also inspired by the struggle of some people who have resist mining and still figthing thier land and evironment for the sake of the young generation. It is really very great learning experience for me to meet inspiring people during the project which served as one of my encourangement to pursue advocating issues not only in our place but also to others.

very much changed

Before joining the project, I only recognize mining through its definition and some positiveand negative effects of it. But when I was given the chance to be part of theproject, my understanding expanded through the experiences we had last 2016 and 2017.

Going back from the grassroots, I discovered new things that I need to input not only in my knowledge but also in my life. From the interviews we had in various communities, it slowly sink in my mind that “ah, mining is so complex and I really need to learn the side stories and reasonsof why mining exist.” Though I didn’t came from a mining village, it’s already imbedded on myself that it’s my responsibility to be concern and act as a watchdog on the environmental issues happening here in the Cordillera.

Aside from gathering information, what really affected me much was the experience of going inside a small scale tunnel. It was then that I had proven that mining is really hard. Hard enough that miners doesn’t just risk their time and theirefforts but mainly themselves.

Moreover, brainstorming and making monologues for the theatre presentation was a good way to be more mindful of the various mining situations. It is where I recognizethe beliefs, the dos and don’ts and the mining ethics.

very much changed

I was able to understand the mining situation of our province more so that I grew up in a mining community. These understandings affected on the way how I comment on mining issues being posted in the social media. Just this year, the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, who suspended and closed many mining companies, was not re-appointed. Thus, this created a big issue in the country which involved anti and pro mining. There were also protests in different places and I believe, the performance we performed in Baguio, Manila and Banda Aceh is a sign of our protest and a way of helping the people understand more about the mining issues.

2. What do you think about utilizing theater methodology when we deal with an environmental issue such as mining issues in Cordillera ?

very effective

Theater is entertaining which makes it very effective channel in educating Cordillerans/people about the effects of mining. First, because it is a play, the audience are more attentive in listening and watching unlike when it is done through a lecture. Second, since a theater presentation is a depiction of what happens in real life, the experience of the audience are raw, the emotion which we want them feel were effectively delivered. Lastly, aside from being entertained, the audience are knowingly or unknowingly being informed of the effects of mining.

very effective

“I will just give what my brother and friend’s reaction” as the audience reaction. Some said that they are come to senses like my brother when they watch the performance. He told me that it’s a good idea because if other miners will saw this one, they will just reflect to theirselves. Aside from the environment, it was also for the health of people on the mining areas and as a miner. My friend also says that there are good effect of mining like him that it helps in his education and also allowances. But he said that miners should not over torture the environment actually large scale mining are the one who really destroy the environment. For me, from the reactions of other people, we could not please them to say no to mining, but at least, we show them the bad effects and why we should protect our environment.

very effective

Utilizing the theater method in addressing environmental issues such as mining is very effective because it is directly address to audience. We can see on how the audience react. They observed on how the performer portray their character realistically can even relate to the performance.

very effective

Apart from using Information Communication technologies, programs, seminars etc, theater is such a powerful methodology that would totally impact audience/viewers about the lifestyle of mining. With the sudden advent of technologies, it is a good way to refresh and go back from the old ways “theater”. It is still an awe that until now, theatre provides such values as responsibility and freedom to inform, educate, inspire, motivate and to give morals. For me, it’s already a great impact.

Environmental issues are now alarming and such proposals to promote solutions are needed for today. Theater is great way to be an opener for a society’s awareness.

very effective

I believe in the efficacy of theater as a tool in educating the audiences. First, it is a fresh encounter between the performers and the audience. The audience are seeing the performers with their own eyes, listening to their lines and feeling the energy the performers are giving. These I believe makes theatre a very effective tool not just in dealing environmental issues but also to promote other social issues say politics, health and the like.

Second, because the lines from the performance were based on real stories of people we interviewed, theater is an effective way in bringing these stories to other people. Theater does not only encourage the audience to believe what the actors are saying, but it also encourages them to do something. Their reactions and feed backs are immediately being seen and recognized by the performers and from these, we would know that we our touching their lives; that we imparting knowledge to them so that they will take actions.

Third, forum theatre was used in the performance. The audience members were emancipated in the comforts of being am ere audience, but rather they became part of the performance. Some participated and became actors on stage and shared their views on the issue. But more than this, even if they did not step on the stage to perform with the actors, their responses, their simple facial expressions which I saw clearly during the performance is a testimony that they were thinking or perhaps imagining what they would say if they were in the shoes of the performers.

3. Would you share your suggestions and ideas, if we could have a similar project in the future.

This project educating people about the environmental effects of mining through theater is beneficial to communities especially to places which do not know what or how mining really is. I suggest that continued research of the environmental effects of mining in different places should be conducted. Further, these researches should be presented to those places which do not have mining yet so that in case big mining companies offer mining in their community, they have an idea on what the mining companies are offering.

More experience or interviews to be conducted in some places that have mining areas including the large scale mining. It’s also good if could have performances in places who have mining areas so that they could view the effect of mining is it good or bad? Including also the places that don’t have yet mining area so that they will preserve their environment for the future.

If we could have a similar project in the future, I hope that we can have more direct experiencial learning.

From my point of view in the 2016th and 2017th project, I observed the differences of the performances. Last year’s performance was a high five for me, I did my best, we did our best, and all of the staff helped and had a wonderful performance. But this year, it was more than perfect with the combination of music, dance, and culture.

If there would be another similar project again in the future, I would suggest to have a clearer script for I admit that we had a hard time analyzing the script last month.

I think I don’t have much to suggest for this project. Unity and teamwork was there, we brainstormed and participated for the project, our directors really did their part in helping and guiding us, our set and light designer contributed in the success of the performance, other staffs has always been there with us, and mostly we were accommodated accordingly.

Moreover, the approaches and techniques for the project is perfect. Therefore, the result was that the project successfully conveyed the message to the people.

Lastly, if there would be a similar project in the future, I hope to see myself beingpart of the family again.

The project is already a very goodopportunity for the voice of the youth to be heard. But if there will beprojects such as this in the future, the following will be my suggestions andcommendations:

Facilitators have a very big role in projects such as this. I suggest that there would be two facilitators of different field of specialization. One who has a great knowledge not only about mining, but about the environment in general and who can understand the language of theparticipants. The other one would be of course a theatre practitioner. This suggestion was based on the lines being given by some of the performers. Some lines are being added which no longer sync with the issue being discussed and some are irrelevant. If this is not possible, when the performance is already made, the script should be written down and let it be read by a playwright sohe or she can make suggestions on how to make the lines better and moreunderstandable to a general audience.

I appreciate that in this project, the participants are very diverse. Some are in the field of education, criminology, engineering, law, and pharmacy. They also came from different communities in the Cordilleras. Thus, there is a high possibility that the learnings these participants gained from the workshops, performances and encounters with different people of different nationalities can be shared to a bigger number of people.

I would like also to suggest that the participants should understand clearly the aim of the project. More than making a performance, they should understand they also become ambassadors in promoting environmental awareness. Thus, their actions must sync with the aim and objectives of the project because if not, then there would be no sustainability within themselves. This leads to my fourth suggestion

If there’s a possibility, I would like to suggest that the participants will conduct a project in their own community or school to re-echo whatever learnings they gained from the project. They can also present the video of the performance and the whole projects because not all have an access with the internet. If it’s also possible, this can be an extension of the project because I believe if the participants are encouraged to initiate projects such as these with the help of the organization, they will be inspired to continue the advocacies of CGN and might as well influence more youth in their community or school to take a positive role in the society. I think this would also a good way to empower them and even if CGN is no longer there to assist them, they can already do something even in small ways. This, I believe, would help in the sustainability of the project.

A good stage design that affects ourperformance

The set/stage design is very well prepared

Music is a great element of theater

The used of observed own dialect during the performance is good for the actors because we can freely express our thoughts. It is also a weak point because the audience can not exactly relate from it(Manila and Indonesia)

Between participants

Energetic (tired)

Being perfectionists between participants

Pride to lie low

Misunderstandings affects the performance

Late in sleeping because of facebook

Lack of time to sleep that causesparticipants energetic

No time management

Lack of workshop

Lack of participant discipline

We can’t avoid giving negative reactions! Iobserved that some participants can’t control their negative feelings towardsme. Along the workshop I was so franksometimes. I didn’t expect that some other s got bad attitude. I don’t want toconflict schedule. I can’t appreciate behavior/attitude.

Misunderstanding with each other

Sometimes we are being pressured because ofthe changes in the stories

Have not enough sleep

Lack of sleep

Some are self-centered

Some has high pride

Misunderstanding between participants andfacilitators

Staff, they should know why the reason whyI am like that or better they talk directly to me

Misunderstanding within the group

Damgas only knows kalokohan (being carzy)

Lack of sleep but it’s our own fault

Meymey nan kakadwa (our companions areslowpot)

There are a lot of conflicts between thedirectors and participants

During the performance, some of theparticipants don’t concentrate to the play.

During the rehearsal, some of us don’tcooperate

Time management

Language barrier- it’s hard to communicate

Some are over sensitive or reactive

I am a bit slow to react and just keep someof my opinions or thoughts or ideas to myself. I am not a frank type of personbut I will try to be in the future to avoid issues.

Discipline, in general to all was “lacking”

There was no workshop, only in Kayan. Incase there are in Baguio and Manila, it was not eveident.

The participants are needed to be toldalways what to do in the beginning of the workshop, it should be automatic.

Sometimes the participants are insensitive

Sometimes because of misunderstandingthemselves or with the directors, the practice can’t be pursue well

Participants can’t practice well or can’tgive their 100% best performance because they’re very tired and lack of time tosleep/rest at night

Sometimes the gap between the participants, directors, seniors are subsiding

Always change of plans for the show

The allowance is not enough

Lack of time to buy souvenirs

Participants don’t give and take by therole/dialogs

We participants encounteredmisunderstanding which hurts my feelings and made me cry once

Since the workshop started, I had a lack ofsleep and it’s like I get use to it that’s why even the activity for the day isover, I still sleep late at night.

Being judgmental (some participants)

No assessment after each activity is done

Language barrier

being un-energetic- because we are tootired

being perfectionist

Unbalanced pride- all of us here is bornwith a pride but pride sometimes is adjustable especially when it talks aboutwork so pls lie low sometimes, or just try to understand others.

During rehearsal- some of us are not takingit seriously, some are doing other things.

Improper time management

Language barrier (Indonesia- it isdifficult to communicate because we have different language and eventranslators can’t interpret properly.

We a lot of misunderstandings andmisconceptions about what should we do next

Tired, lack of sleep, stress, and mixedemotions are our greatest barrier to act comfortably

Borrowing of costumes is an advantage especially when you cannot find it knowing that your role is coming

Staff/facilitators/ directors

No clear instructions from the directors

Changes of plans

Game activities in workshops takes a lot oftime in rehearsals

Rehearsals should start from beginning toend (no cuts between scenes and repeat again)

Attitude, there are some participants thatis self-centered, what they like is that attentions are in them. Example in theworkshop, this one participant speaks louder than the others who is speakingjust to be noticed.

Playing games sometimes takes much timefrom the practice workshop

In the negative aspect, what I only noticeand I don’t like is that when during practice time we start very late that’swhy we go home late at night. The reason why we always sleep late.

One more thing that I noticed is thatduring practice/rehearsals we don’t start from the first scene until last, thereason why sometimes we forgot the flow of the scenes.

Another is that they don’t train/workshopus before we join the play then suddenly they shout or they say something badto us where they know that they did not taught to us that actions or ideas.

Language barrier of having not a singlemember who can speak English, Japanese, Filipino, and Acehnese. translating notonly the texts but ideas back and forth has indeed time consuming

The distress of time. The quality of Baguioshow and Manila show would have been a lot better if there were more time. Allparticipants had passion in theater and performance, but some of the shyparticipants’ acting has been better if there was time to boost theirconfidence individually through mind training and relaxation techniques.

It took a bit of time for everyone moldedin the play to set along with one another. So, perhaps molding everyone in thewarm ups could have made the happen a little earlier

The translation in the projector is a bit

confusing and some were not mentioned.

Continuation (to give chance to others toimprove)

Simplify workshops

Longer time for planning technicalities

Final script (discussion) with lightsrehearsal and cameraman and participants

Task should be distributed well betweenstaff and facilitators

More legwork and technical staffs, too manyfacilitators and assistant facilitators

Concepts of workshop is not clear

Output should be defined

Clear communication between facilitatorsand directors

Discussion between participants

Working together, be open to each other

Every activity there should be assessment

More workshops on dance and playing gongs

More workshops on our traditional dance andsongs

Set rules and regulations for participants

This project gives individualsenlightenment, and life meaning. I may not be a good actor that you didn’tappreciate, give me more time to learn, because when I come I’ll be a differentperson, I will not be holding my dreams on my little hand. Thanks for moldingme to be good person.

More workshops to come.

Time management.

More workshops! Salamat (thank you)

Sya gawis nan goal nan workshop ay nay (yes the goal of this workshop is good)

There should be allowance for us to use inour studies.

Clear and early instructions from thedirector regarding the practice and the performance

For the actors, they should keep tothemselves, if they can their feelings to other actors or just let it out tohim/her to avoid outbursts that will result too many problems.

Facilitators should at least state theobjective/s of whatever activities they conduct for the participants toappreciate it and not just enjoy- to preserve also the purpose of the workshop

Extensive instructions and changes shouldbe done in the earlier part of the workshop, not last minute

Facilitators and participants should atleast discuss why they want to change parts of the script or play.

Facilitators should at least be straightforward to their comments to the participants

Orientation of participants before theworkshops

More workshop

For the future, I am recommending that thedirectors must have music and dance workshop for the participants because goodstage set and lightings.

After this theater workshop/show, I expectmore workshops to be conducted for me/us to learn more and have much moreexperience.

If we were to do this again, having aconcrete and consolidated schedule will be really good. Missing the presence ofthe consolidated schedule caused miscommunications while putting the showtogether.

Definitely need someone who can speak allfor English, Japanese, Acehnese, and Filipino

Needed longer amount of time to make thefirst two shows (Baguio and Manila) good ones.

Show quality would have been better if wedid discussion/meeting with all members of the show more often.

I recommend that in every activity to bedone there should be an assessment to point out the weaknesses of the activityfor us to know what to improve

Try to connect each other..

Patience and understanding (not only verballybut also on waiting

Assess ourselves and try to adjust in every situation.

We are very glad that we can relationshipwith from Philippines and Japan; they are very friendly even though hard tocommunicate each other. We are glad we know Jantang and Lampana that we don’tknow before.

Group Tiga

We are happy we can share our experiencewith other people. We hope we could do more, even better. This was an amazingexperience.

We lack sleep but it taught us to adopt with schedule and how to keep up with time.

We are very happy we want to say a lot ofthanks to all Philippines and Japan staffs who teach us knowledge in theater. We hope that this continues in the future.

Group Empat

This workshop taught us a lot of knowledgeand helps build our confidence, Any development from this activity will surelybenefit us in the future.

There is lots of shyness during the workshop. We did our best to be brave, but we are more nervous and lack confidence. Welike to become like the Filipino actors who are great and talented.

The workshops inspired us all. We are sadthat we did not have much time with the other Philippine participants. We hopethat the Filipinos enjoy Acehnese food.

Filipino Staff

Komunitas Tikar Pandan is so accommodating. We became more aware about Acehnese culture especially their clothing, prayertime, and body languages. This is a new learning experience because it happenedin another country, culture, and religion. This is the first we encounteredother countries. The Acehnese students are very active participating in theworkshop.

The Acehnese students improved in just fewdays.

Empower youth to change community throughthe use of theater.

There are delayed workshops and languagebarrier.

We hope for a continuation of the projectand the group remains. There should be more days for the Cordilleran andAcehnese participants for cultural exchange. There should be more orientationfor the participants about the workshops and integrate more on cultural dancesand songs.

We have to remember that there is purposewhy you were born in your place. That is to make good changes to yourcommunity. Theater is one good way to inform people that is why we are here.

Japan Staff

This is the first foreign country I visitedwhich is the Philippines and Indonesia. This experience is completely differentto me. I appreciate the Philippine actors for being active in the workshop. TheAcehnese participants were great for producing a great performance in justthree days. I hope that building relationships between cultures through the useof Theater will be passed on to other people and future generation.

I was very worried during the first day.The Acehnese participants were very shy and serious. This morning when I sawthe performances, they were bigger than yesterday. They changed very well overnight. The energy is far bigger and better than yesterday.

I am impressed for today’s performancesdespite us having fully-packed audiences. I am very happy now.

Congratulations for the success. This was agood opportunity for all of us, Komunitas Tikar Pandan, Acehnese participants,Japan and Philippines. Our hearts are closer with each other now and hoping tosee you all again.

Everyone have stated already what I amabout to say. Thank you everyone for being friendly to me. I am very proud toall of you for today’s performances. I advise young people in this room not todo the same with what I did with theater. I stopped theater after graduating inhigh school. I learn that it is very important to keep on doing theater.

Congratulations. You did very well.Everybody, we couldn’t imagine you could play on the stage like that. Surprisingly, the performance is with confidence. Filipino evaluation said that the language barrier is negative. This is the reason why we are using theater as a tool to understand each other. The world has many languages. English is not the best,or even Japanese or Filipino. Theater can help open the mouth and the mind to communicate each other without using language. Do not forget that language isnot a barrier. Now you know how to act and connect using theater. We are very sorry we didn’t have enough time to learn Indonesia language. We should be the one to learn it first. You represent your community. When you come back to your community we hope you could share to everyone what you learned here. We might be separated due our location but we are living in just one planet. We are one, people here on earth. We are all the same and we can always share.

Komunitas Tikar Pandan Staff

Thank you to all our new friends from Japanand the Philippines. You teach us a lot about your culture and many otherthings through theater. Theater is not only media but it teaches us tocommunicate with each other.

At first, I was afraid about this eventknowing that there are three countries involved. I know that this is difficultto handle. But then I am also sure that the event will run smoothly. I amworried that what has happened before will happen in this workshop;participants became afraid and they go back home. This is one of the bestworkshops because nobody asked me to go home. All did their best. I believethat young generation will make the world better. That is why this workshop isfor the youth. This event will stop if communication will also stop. Socialmedia really helped a lot.

Congratulations to everyone for the success of this project. We were able to control the audience in the theater -the same with the performance of the Filipinos in Balitok. What is being observed on our community is communicated in the theater. I hope that this relationship among Aceh, Japan, and Philippines will continue. Everyone is happy and that is very important. If we are happy doing the things we would like to do. Aceh, Japan, and Philippines are all happy and that is enough, sharing the happiness.
